Implementation Intentions: Designing Trigger-Based Routines

Scientific background: Gollwitzer, P. M. (1999). Implementation intentions: Strong effects of simple plans. American Psychologist.

Vague goals like 'I want to write more' or 'I will study tonight' usually fail because they rely on willpower. Implementation intentions automate habits by offloading the trigger to your environment.

Implementation Protocol

1

Isolate the Target Behavior

Write down the exact action you want to perform (e.g. write 500 words of copy, push one commit) rather than general ambitions.

2

Select a Non-Negotiable Cue

Pick a physical, highly stable anchor in your environment (e.g., finishing breakfast, closing your terminal window, sitting with coffee).

3

Formulate the If-Then Script

Write it down literally: 'If [cue occurs], then I will [perform action].' This pre-programming makes the target behavior automated.

4

Pre-prepare the Workspace

Minimize start friction by setting up your environment ahead of time. Leave the editor open, place the notebook on the desk, or clear the workspace.

Summary Protocol

By pre-programming your environmental cues, you bypass the friction of starting. Let the environment trigger your actions automatically.

Stop Procrastinating. Start Planning.

Build routines that stick

Ditch the complicated todo boards. Download Pip to set exactly three morning commitments, seal them before 10 AM, and build streaks grounded in human biology.
