Fogg Behavior Model

Scientific Definition

The formula (B = MAP) stating that a behavior occurs only when Motivation, Ability (simplicity), and a Prompt (cue) converge simultaneously. When motivation is low, a behavior will only occur if the friction to start is near zero.

Historical Origin

Created by Dr. BJ Fogg, founder of the Behavior Design Lab at Stanford University. Fogg proved that relying on motivation to drive long-term behavior change is flawed because motivation is naturally volatile; reducing friction (increasing Ability) is 10x more effective.
